Planning a wedding in Traverse City sounds dreamy (and it is), but there are a few things most couples don’t realize until they’re actually in it.
After photographing weddings across Northern Michigan for years, I’ve seen what helps a day feel easy and meaningful… and what tends to catch people off guard.
If you’re starting to plan your Traverse City wedding, here are a few things that are truly worth knowing:

Northern Michigan weather is part of what makes this place so special, but it can also be one of the biggest variables on your wedding day.
July and August are typically the most stable months. BUT even in the middle of summer, it’s not uncommon to have wind, quick temperature shifts, or an unexpected rain shower. The lake plays a big role in that.
The biggest thing to plan for isn’t just rain… it’s wind. It can affect ceremony setups, audio, veils, hair, and overall comfort. Having a solid backup plan (that you actually feel good about) makes all the difference. The couples who plan for flexibility tend to feel the most relaxed no matter what the day brings.
Traverse City and the surrounding areas (like Leelanau County and Petoskey) have some incredible venues, but there aren’t an overwhelming number of them. Because of that, many venues book out 12–18 months in advance, especially for peak dates in summer and fall.
If you have your heart set on a specific location or a Saturday during peak season, it’s worth prioritizing your venue early in the planning process.

One of the most common things couples underestimate is how spread out everything can be. It’s very normal for getting ready locations, ceremony sites, and reception venues to be 20–40 minutes apart. Add in summer traffic, the Charlevoix draw bridge, or peak fall color weekends, and those drives can take even longer.
Building extra time into your timeline (and considering transportation for guests) can help your day feel much more smooth and unhurried.
Northern Michigan has an incredibly talented wedding vendor community, but it is smaller than what you’d find in a big city. That means your favorite vendors may only take on a limited number of weddings each season and tend to book up quickly.
The upside is that many vendors here know each other and work together often, which creates a really seamless and supportive experience on the wedding day.

If you’re getting married in Traverse City, the natural light is one of the most beautiful parts of the experience. Summer sunsets over Lake Michigan are late and incredibly soft, while fall brings earlier golden light with rich, warm tones.
Your timeline plays a big role in how we’re able to use that light. Even setting aside just a few minutes around sunset can make a meaningful difference in your images (and in how the day feels).
The weddings that feel the most meaningful and enjoyable aren’t the ones packed with back-to-back events; they’re the ones that leave room to breathe. Building a timeline with a little flexibility allows you to actually be present. To have conversations, to take it in, to experience the day instead of just moving through it.
When couples prioritize presence over perfection, everything tends to fall into place in a much more natural way.
There are a few smaller details that couples don’t always think about at first:
None of these are deal-breakers, but being aware of them ahead of time helps you plan with more confidence.

If you’re planning a Traverse City wedding and want it to feel relaxed, meaningful, and true to you, I’d love to be a part of it.
