If you’re planning a wedding in Northern Michigan, you’ve probably asked yourself one question more than any other:
“How much is this actually going to cost?”
The answer depends on your guest count, venue, and priorities. A 50-person vineyard wedding will have a very different budget than a 250-person tented celebration overlooking Walloon Lake.
After photographing more than 250 weddings across Northern Michigan over the past 12 years, I’ve seen celebrations of all sizes and budgets. While I can’t tell you exactly what your wedding will cost, I can help you understand where couples typically invest, why those investments matter, and how to make confident decisions as you build your budget.

While every wedding is different, many Northern Michigan weddings fall somewhere between $40,000 and $200,000+, depending on guest count, venue, vendor team, and priorities. Smaller celebrations may cost less, while multi-day wedding weekends and highly customized events can exceed that range.
One thing I’ve noticed over the years is that two weddings with the exact same budget can feel completely different. The biggest difference usually isn’t how much a couple spends—it’s where they choose to invest.
The sections below break down the major categories of a typical Northern Michigan wedding budget and explain what you’re paying for in each one.

Typical Investment: $3,000 – $15,000+
Your venue is often the foundation of your wedding budget because it influences many of the costs that follow.
Some Northern Michigan venues include catering, bar service, tables, chairs, and staff. Others—especially private estates and waterfront properties—require bringing in nearly everything from tents and flooring to generators and luxury restroom trailers.
While private property weddings offer incredible flexibility and breathtaking settings, they’re often more expensive than couples initially expect because you’re essentially building a venue from the ground up.
Typical Investment: $5,000 – $15,000+
Hiring a planner is about far more than keeping a timeline. It’s about having someone who already knows the questions you haven’t thought to ask.
Especially if you’re planning from out of state, an experienced planner can recommend trusted vendors, review contracts, coordinate logistics, manage communication, and solve countless small problems before they ever become your problems.
One thing I’ve learned after working alongside many incredible planners is that they don’t just make weddings run smoothly. They allow couples—and their families—to actually enjoy the experience.

Typical Investment: $5,000 – $8,500+
Photography is one of the few parts of your wedding that becomes more valuable over time.
Long after the flowers have faded and the cake has been eaten, your photographs become how you remember the day—and eventually how future generations experience it, too.
What many couples don’t realize is that they’re investing in far more than wedding day coverage. A photographer often spends months helping with planning, building timelines, scouting locations, preparing equipment, communicating with other vendors, and getting to know you before the wedding ever arrives. Afterward comes the careful process of selecting, editing, backing up, and delivering a carefully curated gallery of images.
Coverage length, second photographers, engagement sessions, heirloom albums, film photography, and Super 8 coverage can all influence the overall investment.
Typical Investment: $3,000 – $7,000+
If photography preserves what your wedding looked like, videography preserves what it sounded and felt like.
The laughter during speeches. Your vows. The way your grandparents danced together. The cheering as you walked back down the aisle.
For many couples, video becomes the perfect complement to photography, allowing them to relive the movement, voices, and energy of the day for years to come.

Typical Investment: $4,000 – $15,000+
Florals do far more than decorate a space; they help create the atmosphere of your wedding.
They’re also one of the easiest categories to underestimate.
Your investment includes much more than flowers. Designers spend days sourcing blooms, conditioning them, creating arrangements, transporting everything safely, installing designs on-site, and returning afterward for breakdown.
If your vision includes ceremony installations, hanging floral pieces, or abundant reception designs, labor often becomes just as significant a part of the investment as the flowers themselves.
Typical Investment: Catering: $90 – $160+ per person | Bar: $2500 – $6,000+
For many weddings, food and beverage represent the largest portion of the budget—and for good reason. It’s one of the biggest ways your guests experience your wedding.
Beyond the meal itself, catering often includes chefs, servers, bartenders, rentals, setup, cleanup, service charges, and gratuities. Those additional fees can add thousands of dollars to the final bill, so it’s important to understand exactly what’s included in every proposal.
Typical Investment: $3,000 – $12,000+
Rentals are where many Northern Michigan wedding budgets begin to grow.
Especially for tented or private estate weddings, you’ll likely need:
Many couples don’t realize these items often come from multiple rental companies, with separate delivery, setup, and pickup fees.

Typical Investment: $2,000 – $10,000+
Entertainment shapes the energy of your reception more than almost anything else.
I’ve photographed weddings where guests barely left the dance floor for four straight hours, and others where the reception naturally felt more relaxed. Neither is right or wrong—but your choice of DJ, live band, or musicians has a tremendous impact on how the evening unfolds.
If dancing with your favorite people is high on your priority list, entertainment is an investment you’ll likely remember long after the wedding is over.
Typical Investment: $800 – $2,500+
Professional hair and makeup isn’t just about looking beautiful in photographs. It’s about helping you feel confident, relaxed, and ready to enjoy the day.
Some artists also remain on-site through portraits and the ceremony for touch-ups, helping everything look fresh throughout the day.
Typical Investment: $500 – $3,000+
Invitations are often your guests’ first glimpse into your wedding.
From save-the-dates and invitation suites to menus, escort cards, and welcome bags, paper goods help establish the tone long before anyone arrives in Northern Michigan.

After experiencing many weddings across Northern Michigan, there are a handful of expenses that seem to surprise couples again and again:
Planning for these from the beginning helps avoid surprises later.
Every couple has different priorities. For some, it’s incredible food. For others, it’s live music, florals, or photography.
There isn’t a right answer.
Rather than trying to spend as little as possible, I encourage couples to spend intentionally.
A smaller guest list may allow you to invest in a planner you’ve always wanted. Choosing a venue with more amenities included may reduce rental costs. Scheduling your wedding during the shoulder season or simplifying your floral vision can also create meaningful savings without changing the overall experience.
One thing I’ve noticed is that couples rarely regret investing in the parts of the day they experienced most deeply.
A planner who removes stress. A meal guests rave about for years. A band that keeps everyone on the dance floor. Photographs that become family heirlooms.
The best investments aren’t always the most visible—they’re the ones that shape how your wedding feels.
The goal isn’t to have the biggest wedding budget. It’s to create a wedding that reflects your priorities and allows you to fully enjoy one of the most meaningful days of your life.
Whether you’re planning an intimate gathering in Traverse City or a full wedding weekend on the shores of Walloon Lake, understanding where your budget is likely to go can help you make thoughtful decisions from the very beginning.
After photographing more than 250 weddings, I’ve learned that the weddings people talk about years later rarely revolve around how much was spent. They remember the people who were there, how the day felt, and the moments they shared together.
Your budget should support that experience—not define it.
Every wedding is different, and so is every budget. If you’re looking for a photographer who knows Northern Michigan well and can help you navigate everything from timelines to trusted local vendors, I’d love to hear what you’re planning.
